The Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival, also called Double Fifth Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth moon of the lunar calendar. It is one of the most important Chinese festivals, the other two being the Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese New Year (Spring Festival)。
This festival originates from a tragedy story around 2300 years ago.
A government official named Chu Yuan, with both political integrity and professional competence, was punished by the emperor time and again cause of being framed by his jealous rivals. At last, he threw himself into the Mi Low river as a proof of innocence.
The fishermen living along the river, with respect to Chu Yuan, rushed into their boats to rescue him, while throwing lots of sticky rice dumplings to prevent the dead body from being eaten by the river dragons cause of hunger.
Finally the fishermen didn't find Chu Yuan, but their spirit and efforts have been remembered afterwards by the dragon boat race.
Now, it's been a sense of ceremony that family come together from the busy working days and celebrate it with the sticky rice dumplings and dragon boat race as necessity.
